Books

  • “The End of the World Running Club”, Author: Adrian J. Walker – This is an engaging story about a man, separated from his family after meteor strikes devastate England, and his quest to literally run across much of the country to meet up with them again before they ship out to safer lands.
  • “The Stand”, Author: Stephen King – An epic story in both scope and size that was made into not one but two TV mini-series (1994 and 2020). – The story covers how both good and evil people react to a plague that devastates the world’s population.

Movies

  • The Day After Tomorrow – Lots of unrealistic science and character stereotypes in this.  Notice how the homeless man actually gives good advice on how to stay warm using crumpled up newspaper as insulation (some of the only good science in the movie).
  • 2012 – Big budget Hollywood movie about the end of the world as we know it.
  • Knowing – I’m giving the ending away by revealing that the movie ends with the end of the world.  Towards the end we see how Hollywood portrays how society will react to the news.  Great use of Beethoven’s 7th symphony, 2nd movement at the end (see link to clip below). Notice how Nicholas Cage deftly/subtly portrays his acceptance of the situation by leaving the car door open as he heads into the house.
  • Seeking a Friend at the End of the World – Interesting to see how people react to foreknowledge that the world is ending. Great use of the old Hollies song towards the end of the movie (see link to clip below).
  • Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – Not really a survival story as much as a very funny fish-out-of-water story – though the story does start with the destruction of the Earth,
  • Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane (below descriptions from Wikipedia)
    • Cloverfield – The film, which is presented as found footage shot with a home camcorder, follows six people fleeing from a gigantic monster that attacks New York City while they are having a farewell party.
    • 10 Cloverfield Lane – The film follows a young woman in rural Louisiana, who is held in an underground bunker with two men who insist that a hostile event has left the surface of the Earth uninhabitable.

L.V. Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 – Allegretto («Knowing»)

Hollies “All I Need is the Air That I Breath” from («Seeking a Friend at the End of the World»)
